Below we walk through the entire process using Communities in Schools of Thomasville as an example. They are a small nonprofit using technology to have a big impact on their community.

Step 1

Service Populations

Identify the service population(s) the nonprofit serves.

Who does your nonprofit serve? A nonprofit may have one or several service populations. Communities in Schools of Thomasville has just one service population: Families who have a student enrolled in the Thomasville City School system.

Step 2

Program Areas

Create program areas focused on core objectives of your nonprofits mission.

The Food Pantry Program Area of Communities in Schools of Thomasville is focused on addressing the hunger and food security issues students face at home. This program area provides supplement food boxes to families in need.

CIS Example
  • Food Pantry

We know that hunger can impact a child's ability to concentrate and do well in school. We want to make sure that all children have enough food. Our Food Pantry Program is focused on addressing the hunger and food security issues students face at home. This program area provides supplement food boxes to families in need.

  • In-School Services

Our mission is to surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life. The Site Support Program Area focuses on the implementation of the Communities In Schools model of integrated student supports in collaboration with local schools.

  • Drop Out Prevention

Every nine seconds a student drops out of school. So long as there is a crisis in American public education that causes young people to drop out at an alarming rate, Communities In Schools will lead the charge to transform our educational system.

Step 3

Programs

Define program critera.

Families enroll in programs based on program criteria. The Food Pantry Program Area offers three major programs: 1) The Food Drive Thru Program is available to all families in the service population and is a monthly opportunity for parents to receive a food box while picking up their student from school. 2) The Food Backpack program sends home weekend snacks in the backpacks of elementary school students. 3) The Food Box Delivery Program delivers weekly food boxes to families with the highest need. These boxes are delivered directly to the families door via DoorDash.
